Offstage: LeviNet
Welcome to the first event in the discussion forum series Offstαge!
The ERC Starting Grant project LeviNet – Primo Levi’s Correspondence with German Readers and Intellectuals aims at constructing a completely bilingual digital edition of the author Primo Levi’s (1919–1987) letters with his German-speaking correspondents between 1956 and 1986. His network covered West and East Germany, Austria and Belgium, and spanned over different languages.
The LeviNet scholars and translators constantly consider multiple aspects of multilingualism and its presentation: for example, Levi’s and his correspondents’ letters are shown in the original language (Italian, German, French or English) and in Italian and English translation in the digital online edition.
Sometimes translators however decide to leave elements in other languages. These are no random decisions, however. How are multilingual choices made? What are the criteria employed? How does the selection of strategies reflect on the final results?
The principal investigator of the LeviNet project, Martina Mengoni (Università di Ferrara), will present the project and the challenges encountered by the team.
The event takes place on Tuesday 1 April 2025 at
