Multea Talk: Lost languages

What happens when a multilingual writer has lost a language? What strategies does the writer employ for recovering, discovering and uncovering the language for creative work?

Dinara Rasuleva’s project lostlingual and Sabira Ståhlberg’s PolyGlot poetry both contain strong elements of lost and (re)discovered languages.

The writing styles and language choices of these two poets are widely different, but they have something in common: through multilingual writing and various language activities, they are not only recovering their lost Tatar languages.

Encountering and exploring also other languages in their multicultural worlds, they expand the literary and linguistic repertoires of Tatar in unique ways. Both also support others to repossess their lost languages.

Together with Alexandra Tkacheva (University of Michigan), Dinara and Sabira discuss losing languages and the processes of (re)discovering, using and reformatting lost languages in multilingual poetry.
